Shaft ChoiceConsider the Shaft the engine to the club without the right engine the performance will be limited and this is precisely why shaft choice is so crucial in a golf club. Without the correct shaft selection you will find it difficult to find the right balance between distance, direction control and feel, Things to look for in shaft selection are: 1 Shaft flex:Shaft flex is simply the ability to resist bend, all golfers create different club head speeds therefore a person who creates a clubhead speed of 90mph with a 6 iron will need a shaft that flexes differently from a golfer who's club head speed is 75mph with a 6 iron. The slower the clubhead speed the more flex is required. The flex categories are ladies flex, Senior or light flex, regular flex, stiff flex and extra stiff flex. And in amongst these flex categories there are variances of stiffness depending on shaft construction. 2 Shaft Material:The 2 most commonly used materials in shafts are known as Steel and Graphite shafts. Steel shafts are normally a lot heavier in total weight then a graphite shaft and offer different playing characteristic then a graphite shaft. There are many varying factors that influence which shaft material a golfer may choose and these are discussed at the time of the fitting session. Generally speaking though you will see graphite shafts predominantly used by lady and Senior golfers. The reason for this is that graphite is much lighter then steel and by lightening the overall weight of the club it will help create more club head speed. 3 Shaft weight:When trying to determine what shaft will suit your swing best shaft weight plays an important part in the fitting process. One example of this is a golfer who has a very fast tempo, he may benefit by going to a heavier shaft as this extra weight may help control the tempo of the swing therefore effecting shot consistency and performance. Shaft weight also effects ball flight condition's, if the ball is flying to low a lighter shaft may influence a higher shot trajectory. There are always exceptions to the rule but always remember the lighter the shaft generally the softer the flex if you have two shafts that are regular in flex and one shaft is 100 grams and the other 60 grams in weight the 60 gram shaft will have more flex and this may influence your shaft selection. Proper fitting of golf shafts should require the use of a golf launch monitor to accurately determine the golfers club head speed so an accurate shaft selection can be achieved As you can see shaft selection sounds difficult and that's why it is important to have your clubs expertly fitted by a PGA professional club fitter. Our Swing Technology Centre was purpose built for this reason and our development of out fitting process has made the once exhausting task of finding the right club easier and more beneficial to you the golfer.
